From Paul’s Faith to the Works of James

People seem confused from time to time on how to reconcile Paul’s focus on faith to James’ focus on works.  Here’s a good verse that ties them together:

Galatians 5:6 – For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value.  The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. (NIV)

So you see that Paul is talking about works, but not the works of legalism or of the Law, but works born out of love.  This is a clue that these are the “works” that James is talking about.  These works are also known as the “fruit of the Spirit” (v. 22), “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.”
